Common Inverter Problems We Fix

Solar inverters are the hardest-working component in your system, converting DC power from your panels into usable AC electricity every day. Over time, heat, dust, and electrical stress can cause faults that reduce your generation or shut your system down entirely.

Our CEC-accredited technicians have the diagnostic tools and experience to quickly identify and resolve issues across all major inverter brands. Whether it's a simple error code reset or a component-level repair, we'll get your system back online fast.

  • Error codes and warning lights
  • No power output or reduced generation
  • Tripping safety switches or circuit breakers
  • Overheating and thermal shutdowns
  • Display failures or blank screens
  • Wi-Fi and monitoring connectivity issues
  • Ground fault and isolation errors
  • Fan noise or unusual sounds

Why Inverters Fail Out Here

An inverter is the hardest-working part of a solar system and the first thing to age. It runs every daylight hour converting high-voltage DC into AC, inside a sealed box bolted to a wall. In this part of the state two things shorten that life more than anything else, and neither of them is the inverter's fault.

The first is grid voltage. It sits high across regional South Australia, and every rooftop system on the street pushes it higher again through the middle of the day. When it climbs past what the inverter is permitted to feed into, the inverter stops exporting and waits. Owners see generation drop out around midday and come back in the afternoon, which looks like a failing unit and is very often a network and settings problem instead. Telling those two apart is the first thing we do.

The second is heat. An inverter on a west-facing wall in the Murraylands spends every summer afternoon in full sun, and heat is what ages the electronics inside it. A unit that keeps derating or shutting down late in the day is frequently mounted in the wrong place rather than broken, and moving it costs a fraction of replacing it.

What We Check on a Diagnostic Visit

  • Inverter error logs and fault history
  • DC string voltages and currents against expected output
  • Grid voltage at the inverter terminals across the day
  • DC isolator condition, a known failure point on older installs
  • Panel-level output where optimisers or micro-inverters are fitted
  • Earth continuity and insulation resistance
  • Cooling clearance, ventilation and mounting position
  • Monitoring connection and data reporting

How It Works

Our Inverter Repair Process

From initial diagnosis to final testing, here's how we get your solar system back to full performance.

  1. Diagnostic Assessment

We test the inverter and the whole array with proper metering gear to find what is actually causing the fault or the drop in output.

  2. Fault Identification

Our CEC-accredited technicians analyse error codes, voltage readings, and system logs to pinpoint the exact issue affecting your inverter.

  3. Repair or Replace

We carry out the repair on-site where possible, or arrange a warranty replacement if the inverter is beyond economical repair.

  4. System Testing

After the repair we test the system to confirm it is generating properly and that the safety protections still trip when they should.

  5. Performance Report

You get a written report covering the fault, the work done, and anything we think is worth keeping an eye on.

Honest Advice

When to Upgrade vs Repair

Not every inverter fault warrants a repair. If your unit is older than 10 years, out of warranty, or uses outdated technology, upgrading to a modern inverter can be more cost-effective in the long run. Newer models from brands like Fronius and Sungrow offer higher efficiency, built-in monitoring, and longer warranties of up to 12 years.

We'll always give you an honest assessment. If a repair makes sense, we'll fix it. If an upgrade will save you more money over time, we'll explain why and provide options that suit your budget and system size.

Common Questions

Inverter Repair FAQs

How do I know if my solar inverter needs repairing?

Common signs include a red or orange warning light on the inverter, error codes on the display, your electricity bills increasing unexpectedly, or your monitoring app showing reduced or zero generation. If your inverter screen is blank or the unit is making unusual buzzing or clicking sounds, it likely needs professional attention.

How long does a typical inverter repair take?

Most inverter repairs are completed within a single visit of 1-3 hours. If a replacement part needs to be ordered or a warranty claim lodged with the manufacturer, we'll keep you informed of the timeline and get your system back online as quickly as possible.

Is it worth repairing an old inverter or should I replace it?

As a general rule, if your inverter is over 10 years old and out of warranty, replacement is usually more cost-effective. Newer inverters are significantly more efficient, offer better monitoring, and come with fresh warranties of 5-12 years. We'll give you an honest recommendation based on your specific situation.

Do you handle inverter warranty claims?

Yes. As CEC-accredited installers, we can manage warranty claims with all major inverter manufacturers including Fronius, SMA, Sungrow, Goodwe, and Enphase. We handle the paperwork, liaise with the manufacturer, and install the replacement unit.

Do you repair inverters you did not install?

Yes. Most of the inverter work we do is on systems another company put on the roof, sometimes a company that is no longer trading. We do not need the original installer records to diagnose a fault, and if the unit is still inside a manufacturer warranty we will tell you so rather than quote you for a replacement.

Can I reset the inverter myself?

If the inverter is showing a fault and you are comfortable doing it, switching the AC isolator off, leaving it a minute and switching it back on will clear a transient fault. If the same code comes back, it is not transient and it needs looking at. Do not open the inverter and do not switch the DC isolators under load.

How often should a solar system be serviced?

Every two to three years suits most systems, and sooner if the panels are somewhere dusty or under trees. A service is worth more than it sounds: DC isolator degradation, loose terminations and corroded connections are all found by inspection long before they show up as a fault or a fire risk.

Can you repair any brand of inverter?

We service and repair all major inverter brands sold in Australia, including Fronius, SMA, Sungrow, Goodwe, Enphase, SolarEdge, ABB, Huawei, Growatt, and Delta. Even if your brand isn't listed, get in touch and we'll let you know how we can help.
